Demand for specialty papers in Europe (excluding Russia) is set to reach 6.46 million tonnes in 2022, according to the latest exclusive data from Smithers – the leading paper, print and packaging consultancy.
After two and a half years of upheaval the industry is continuing to adjust to fundamental changes in end-use markets, supply chain disruption, and soaring energy and pulp prices. The latest expert insight into the future direction of this market will be given at the joint Specialty Papers Europe/Prima 2022 event [https://www.specialtypaperconference.com/specialty-papers-europe] in Amsterdam on 6-7 September. Among the pressing industry issues it will address are:
Sustainability in specialty papers. While wood pulp is one of the most sustainable materials on planet Earth, specialty papers often carry functional coatings that can cause issues during repulping. Thus there is an imperative to adopt new recyclability guidelines and implement of design for recycling principles for paper packaging grades.
Superior coatings. As specialty paper mills position their products as alternatives to flexible plastics, there is a need for superior bio-based and functional barrier coatings; including micro fibrillated cellulose, organic hybrid emulsions, and metallised high-barrier papers.
Regulatory developments. As packaging emerges as a key growth segment, adjusting to the latest regulatory requirements for use in food contact – including those of the US FDA, and new moves to control MOAH migration in Europe – now have an added priority.
