Armed with a strong work ethic, initiative, curiosity and a commitment to training and safety, Dryden Mill process engineer Bilal Junaidi was recently named to Pulp & Paper Canada’s prestigious list of the top 10 Canadian pulp and paper professionals under 40.

Junaidi, who works in the mill’s power and recovery department, was recognized for his demonstrated leadership and drive to achieve the mill’s goals and objectives.

“Bilal is a quick and innovative thinker,” Mill Manager Marie Cyr says of the process engineer. “He is always at the forefront of troubleshooting process-related issues. He is highly regarded by his colleagues and peers because he always takes an active leadership role in procedure development and training to ensure other process operators are well-equipped to be successful in their roles.”

Junaidi’s strong analytical skills have helped the mill break records related to increased uptime and enhanced reliability.

The Dryden process engineer successfully implemented statistical process control for the mill’s concentrator and recovery boiler operation to reduce process variability and improve the evaporator bottleneck. He also takes an active leadership role in many of the mill’s continuous improvement and safety initiatives, including leading incident analysis. Junaidi is a member of the mill’s joint occupational health and safety committee.

More importantly, Junaidi is committed to collaborating with his colleagues across Domtar. He serves on the corporate power and recovery functional team, where he shares his successes and learnings with his colleagues at other mills.

Junaidi credits his success to his team at the Dryden Mill.
“During my time here, I have had a chance to work and learn from incredible individuals,” he says. “I am able to stand where I am today because I was shown nothing but respect from every single person I have worked with. I am truly grateful to them and my supervisor for their guidance and trust in me.”
