Corrosion Doesn’t Have to Ruin Your Day

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

Corrosion is a global problem that can have negative impacts on the environment and lead to economic losses. In the pulping process, chlorine dioxide, bleach, and white liquor have demanding and complex chemistries with highly corrosive characteristics. Many problems with corrosion can be mitigated when suitable materials for specific conditions are selected.

In addition to tanks and scrubbers, Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics (FRP) piping is considered essential equipment in the bleach plant and other areas of a pulp and paper mill. While FRP is an excellent choice of construction material for a corrosive environment, selecting the right material is only the first step to success. A quality project execution plan is also required.

Attendees at TAPPI’s 2023 Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling and Sustainability (PEERS) Conference, November 5-8, 2023 in Atlanta, GA, can learn how to develop a foundation for system and equipment reliability, and to predict  end-of-life for planning and timely replacement, during PEERS’ Engineering, Reliability, Corrosion and Materials (ERCM) track.

Jeff Eisenman of Maverick Applied Science, Inc., will present Maximizing Performance of FRP Piping and Equipment as part of the ERCM track. During his presentation, Eisenman will discuss the critical design considerations for FRP piping and process vessels. He will also address the importance of having a comprehensive Maintenance Assessment Program (MAP) and review key fundamentals required for a quality MAP.

PEERS’ Engineering, Reliability, Corrosion and Materials track addresses key factors in the selection and fabrication of metallic and non-metallic materials for construction, repair and protection of equipment that is reliable, safe and economic. In addition to a panel discussion, Extreme Weather and Supply Chain Challenges – What Impacts Mill Operations, attendees have the opportunity to attend one or more of the expert-led presentations held within the following track sessions:

  • Materials Performance in Corrosive Environments
  • Digester Safety and Fitness for Service
  • Continuous Digester Corrosion & Cracking Case Study

PEERS 2023
PEERS focuses on the latest advancements in technology, as well as fundamental process knowledge and control issues mills face each day. Its. Its peer-reviewed technical program includes seven tracks that address critical operational areas Engineering, Reliability, Corrosion and Materials, program tracks include: Pulping and Bleaching; Energy, Recovery, Lime Kiln and Recaust; Environmental; Recycling; Sustainability; and Nonwood.

Returning this year are the popular Hot Topics Breakfasts, November 7 and 8 at 6:45am. These sessions include a complimentary buffet breakfast followed by peer discussions on the industry’s latest technical/production developments and operating problems. Open to all conference attendees, these breakfast gatherings provide an opportunity for people with similar interests to get together and discuss topics

PEERS also offers multiple networking events, a New Technology Showcase, and an exhibit floor where attendees can speak with suppliers about the latest technologies and solutions.
