“With great power comes great moisture resistance!”
Imagine a material more powerful than a locomotive, more transparent than glass, and more impermeable than Superman's fortress of solitude. Enter graphene, the veritable superhero of materials science. We're talking about a material that's not just stronger than steel, but over 100 times stronger! It is also the thinnest material in the world and a great solution for improving the performance of latex, a common moisture barrier coating for packaging.
Hear about the transformative power of this super material during Thomas Gillgren’s presentation, "Graphene Improves the Moisture Barrier of Latex,” as part of the Coating, Printing and Surface Enhancement track at TAPPICon 2024. During his presentation, Gillgren, a technology specialist at Billerud, will dive into the science behind graphene and how it forms an impenetrable fortress around latex, keeping moisture at bay. Learn how a mere 1% of graphene filler added to latex can reduce the moisture transmission rate between 20% - 30% as compared to the “neat” latexes without graphene. Then decide for yourself if graphene is truly the superhero of materials.
Coating, Printing and Surface Enhancement
The Coating, Printing and Surface Enhancement track consists of nine sessions, each offering a deep dive into critical aspects of the industry.
- Coating Materials
- Barrier Coating Evaluation
- Role of Fundamental Research Roundtable (Joint Session with Papermaking Fundamentals)
- “What's Wrong with Your Coating?” Panel Discussion
- Coating Operations
- New Methods and Materials for Barrier Coating Formulations
- Understanding and Preventing Fold Cracking in Barrier Coated Paper and Paperboard
- Fold Cracking and Digital Printing
- Test Methods
TAPPICon
TAPPICon 2024, April 28 – May 1 in Cleveland, Ohio, offers technology solutions and strategies to help mills maintain competitiveness in the ever-evolving paper, packaging and tissue landscape. With the theme "Rock the Roll! Unleashing the Harmonies of the Paper Industry," the conference promises an exciting blend of innovation, technology, and industry expertise. Attendees will also enjoy multiple networking opportunities and a large exhibit hall with top suppliers from the industry.
The comprehensive, peer-reviewed program offers eight tracks focused on key areas of the mill including: Papermaking Additives; Papermaking Fundamentals; Papermaking Technology & Operations; Coating, Printing and Surface Enhancement; Management (PIMA); Process Control; Recycled Paperboard (RPTA); and Tissue. The program also addresses topics affecting Women in Industry (WIN) and Young Professionals (YP).
