Flexible packaging films serve an essential function of protecting the package’s contents from excessive ingress of oxygen. As sustainability continues to be at the forefront of material innovation, there is a demand to produce eco-friendly barriers. Featured as part of the comprehensive, peer-reviewed technical program at TAPPI’s FlexPack PLACE, April 14-17, 2024, in San Diego, CA, Session 11, ‘High Barrier Sustainable Packaging Designs’ highlights the design considerations of producing recycle-friendly barrier packaging while still meeting end-user expectations.
During the session, attendees will learn about new approaches to extruding PVOH resin on paper substrates, which enables the production of high-barrier paper-based packaging that can be recycled and composted.
Attendees will also hear a case study about a plant-based gas barrier solution that resulted from a value chain collaboration which delivered a sustainably sourced, repulpable, and recyclable alternative for demanding food packaging applications.
The evolution of nylon’s role in multilayer flexible PE packaging, including the acceptance of PE/PA films by most global recycling organizations, will also be discussed in the session. In particular, how this allows packaging designers to create sustainable films without compromising performance.
