TAPPI is gearing up for its highly anticipated 2024 International Conference on Nanotechnology for Renewable Materials (Nano), set to take place June 10-14 in Atlanta, Georgia. This premier event will bring together industry experts, researchers, and innovators to explore the latest advancements and applications in nanotechnology for renewable materials.

A conference highlight is a presentation by Dr. Emily Cranston, an esteemed researcher and professor from the University of British Columbia. Cranston's presentation, titled "A Novel Precipitation-Based Modification Route to Tailor Cellulose Nanocrystal Performance," is part of the Self Assembly and Photonics session on Tuesday, June 11. Attendees can expect groundbreaking insights into innovative surface modification techniques for cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), addressing the need for improved compatibility, stability, and dispersibility.

Surface modification of CNCs has historically relied on methods involving harsh chemicals, complex chemistries, and multiple steps. Cranston's research presents a novel approach by leveraging precipitation of "designer" oligosaccharides during CNC isolation or post-production. This method not only simplifies the modification process but also enhances CNC properties, including redispersibility, water binding ability, rheological profile control, colloidal stability, and hydrophobicity. This easily-scaled, green alternative for CNC surface modification opens the door for expanded CNC functionality and applications.

"We are honored to have Emily Cranston share her groundbreaking research at Nano 2024," said Dr. Meisha Shofner, Nano 2024 Conference Chair. "Her presentation promises to offer invaluable insights into advancing CNC functionality and expanding their applications in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner."

Nano 2024 and Workshops

The Nano 2024 conference will feature a comprehensive program including over 95 peer-reviewed technical presentations, roundtable discussions, expert-led panels, keynote presentations, exhibits, a New Technology Showcase, and multiple networking opportunities. Participants can expect to engage with leading experts in the field, explore emerging trends, and discover the latest technologies driving innovation in nanotechnology for renewable materials.

One highlight of the conference is the inclusion of three hands-on workshops:

  • Advanced Opportunities for Cellulose Nanomaterials in Packaging Applications: Explore how cellulose nanomaterials can be used in packaging applications
  • Cellulose Nanomaterials Safety and Regulatory Update: Stay informed on the latest and emerging safety and regulatory developments in the field, ensuring responsible and compliant practices.
  • CNM Characterization: Delve into the characterization techniques of cellulose nanomaterials and learn best practices and limitations of several techniques/methods.

These workshops offer invaluable opportunities for skill development, knowledge enhancement, and practical learning, empowering attendees to drive meaningful progress in their respective fields.

Learn more about each workshop.

TAPPI is dedicated to fostering collaboration and driving advancements in nanotechnology and its Nano Conference is the perfect a platform for industry professionals to exchange knowledge, explore new possibilities, and shape the future of sustainable materials."
