Total U.S. Printing-Writing Paper Shipments Decreased 7% in January 2025

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the January 2025 Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 7% in January compared to January 2024.

U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers increased 10% in December 2024 compared to the same month last year (Dec 2024 is the latest trade data available).

Total printing-writing paper inventory levels decreased 1% when compared to December 2024.
Individually, changes in U.S. shipments across all three major P-W categories (UFS, CFS, and MECH) in January showed mixed results compared to the same period last year:

  • Uncoated Free Sheet (UFS) shipments decreased by 9%
  • Coated Free Sheet (CFS) shipments decreased by 5%
  • Mechanical (MECH) paper shipments saw a modest 2% increase, albeit on a relatively small volume
