UPM Specialty Papers and Orkla Suomi are introducing a new paper-based wrapper for Panda Milk Chocolate, replacing traditional plastic packaging.

During a six-month pilot, the new solution will be available in stores across Finland.

“At Orkla Suomi, we aim to make everyday life better with sustainable choices,” said Arja Laitinen, Packaging Developer at Orkla Snacks. “This paper-based packaging, developed with UPM and Walki Westpak, is part of our effort to replace fossil-based materials with renewable alternatives.”

The wrapper is made from UPM Asendo™ Pro barrier paper, offering grease resistance while maintaining recyclability. Designed for Orkla Suomi’s existing packaging lines, it eliminates the need for plastic laminates typically used in chocolate packaging.

UPM sources fibres from sustainably managed forests, and the new packaging is certified for food safety and recyclability. In Europe, 83% of paper and cardboard packaging is recycled, supporting the industry’s shift toward eco-friendly materials.

“Chocolate packaging presents challenges due to its grease content, but UPM’s expertise and partner network enable us to support brands like Orkla Suomi in their sustainability goals,” said Kirsi Lahtela, Senior Manager at UPM Specialty Papers.

This initiative marks a step forward in reducing plastic waste and promoting renewable packaging solutions in the confectionery industry.
