This course goes beyond the basics, offering an in-depth exploration of chemical additives and their role in the papermaking process. Through case studies, interactive breakout sessions, and expert instruction, you’ll bridge the gap between theory and real-world application, ensuring you walk away with actionable strategies to enhance production and reduce downtime.

Learn from Industry Experts

This course is led by three renowned experts in wet end chemistry, each bringing decades of experience in papermaking science and process optimization:

  • Larry Anker, Ph.D., Solenis – A TAPPI Fellow and Director of North America Pulp and Paper Applications at Solenis, Dr. Anker has extensive expertise in papermaking chemistry. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics from Washington and Lee University and earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Penn State University.
  • Przem Pruszynski, Ph.D., Global Industrial Technical Consulting – A leading chemistry expert specializing in non-chemical approaches to improving production efficiency and machine stability. Dr. Pruszynski has held R&D leadership roles at Dow and Nalco Water and has authored or co-authored nearly 100 technical papers and publications.
  • Scott Rosencrance, Ph.D., Kemira – A Regional Director at Kemira, Dr. Rosencrance has led marketing, technical applications, PSRA, and R&D for the Americas. A TAPPI Fellow and past editor-in-chief of TAPPI Journal (TJ), he has authored more than 75 patents and publications and previously served as an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Fairmont State University, an MBA from Auburn University, and a Ph.D. from Penn State University.

Key Takeaways

By the end of this training, you’ll be able to:

  • Identify key papermaking furnish properties and process components
  • Solve common wet end chemistry challenges and quality issues
  • Optimize charge balance, first-pass retention, and drainage rates
  • Select the right chemical additives for different paper grades
  • Reduce downtime and enhance production efficiency

Unlike other technical courses, this program is intentionally limited in size to maximize engagement, foster discussion, and provide personalized instruction. While a chemistry background is helpful, it’s not required—our expert instructors ensure that complex concepts are made clear and immediately applicable to your daily operations.
