The commissioner recently pledged Virginia's support for the national Million Hearts campaign by agreeing to conduct one million blood pressure checks during the month of May. The national initiative, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, established a goal of preventing one million heart attacks and strokes in the U.S. over the next five years.
As part of Million Hearts, MWV will offer free blood pressure checks to its Richmond headquarters-based employees during the month of May. The company will also conduct an educational employee event at the end of the month to celebrate both the blood pressure checks and the importance of active employee participation in preventative healthcare, including seeking appropriate medical care, keeping blood pressure under control, and adhering to prescribed medication as directed.
"MWV recognizes the commissioner's warning that Americans suffer more than two million heart attacks and strokes each year, and we are pleased to support her effort to conduct one million blood pressure checks this month," said Bruce V. Thomas, SVP and president, MWV Healthcare. "In addition to offering free blood pressure checks, MWV will continue to educate our employees on the importance of patient medication adherence, which is critical when it comes to managing chronic disease such as hypertension. We are dedicated to improving health outcomes through innovative product design and public-private health policy engagement, and we're proud to support Million Hearts."
