Sappi to Cut 170 Jobs at Fine Paper Mill in Austria
Sappi Limited, South Africa, will cut 170 jobs at its Gratkorn mill in Austria during the next two and a half years. Consultations with employee representatives have not taken place yet, a spokesperson for Sappi Fine Paper Europe said in a report by Euwid Pulp and Paper, Germany. The company also did not disclose details of what types of job cuts were involved, i.e., how many workers would be laid off, take early retirement, or leave the company in other ways.
At the Gratkorn mill, Sappi runs two paper machines with a combined capacity of 950,000 metric tpy of wood free coated papers. The mill also has pulp production with a capacity of 250,000 metric tpy and a sheeting plant with a capacity of 800,000 metric tpy. The complex currently has some 1,300 workers. Sappi noted that the planned reduction in its workforce would improve Gratkorn's cost position.
