The new unit in Maranhão has a bleached eucalyptus market pulp production capacity of 1.5 million metric tpy and surplus power generation of 100 MW. Suzano says it now will focus on effectively executing the ramp-up period to ensure an adequate learning curve. The new unit's production in 2014 is estimated at 1.1 million metric tons.
The project was launched in April 2011. Valmet delivered the main parts of the greenfield pulp mill, including wood handling, cooking plant and fiber line, pulp drying and baling, evaporation, power boiler, recovery boiler, and causticizing and lime kiln. The delivery also included Metso's automation solution for all process areas.
"Providing competitive technologies and solutions for pulp production is one of Valmet's strategic focus areas. We have been working with Suzano, one of the leading pulp producers in Latin America, since the 1970s. This project has been significant both for Valmet and Suzano and has been done in good cooperation between professionals from both companies," Pasi Laine, president and CEO, Valmet, said.
"The Maranhão pulp production unit is one of the largest pulp lines in the world. We have a competent team of experts both from Brazil and the Nordics and our focus now is on securing successful ramp-up of the production," Celso Tacla, area president, South America, Valmet, added.
Suzano Papel e Celulose is one of the largest vertically integrated producers of pulp and paper in Latin America. The company's main products, sold on the domestic and international markets, are eucalyptus pulp, printing and writing paper, and paperboard.
