TAPPI member Hiroki Nanko, Ph.D., has accomplished an impressive list of "firsts" in his career.
He was the first scientist to successfully visualize the structure of interfiber bonding using a Transmission Electron Microscope, and also the first to apply the Confocal Scanning Laser Microscope to pulp and paper research. This effort led to clarifying the mechanism of fiber and paper shrinkage during drying, as well as the hygroexpansion behavior of paper. In another career first, he is now pursuing his passion for pulping nonwood plant materials, which he firmly believes will help create new jobs in both the paper and agricultural industries and can soon grow to be an important segment in the paper industry.Find out more by reading this month’s Member Spotlight.
