TAPPI member Keith Kemp says there are a lot of benefits to TAPPI membership, but the first two on his list are learning and networking. During 30 years of membership, this has been borne out by the tremendous number of "intelligent and interesting people" he’s met, many of whom were more than willing to share their knowledge.
"I have yet to attend a TAPPI event where I could not bring back something of value to my operation," he said. "Yet this is eclipsed by the networking opportunities. I have been the beneficiary of their guidance many times over."
As for the industry, he calls out sustainability as one of the most significant contributions being made around the globe. He cites efforts such as aggressive tree planting programs, recovery boilers and biomass boilers, cogeneration, and recycled fibers as just a few examples of how the industry has been focused on energy efficiency, reuse, and sustainability "long before they became buzzwords."
