Kruger Closes PM 1 at Brompton Newsprint Mill

Kruger Inc., Montreal, Que., Canada, plans to halt production on the No.1 paper machine and deinked pulp plant operations at its Brompton newsprint mill in Sherbrooke, Que. The company has said the shutdown will be for an indefinite period, effective November 14, adding that the decision is intended to rebalance the order book and improve the mill's competitive position.

Market conditions including a continuing drop in demand for newsprint were cited as reasons for the decision to stop production until various components of the mill can be upgraded to answer evolving demand for new products in the pulp and paper industry.

A total of 98 employees will be affected in some way. The shutdown will reduce the mill’s annual newsprint production by 100,000 metric tons. The company has said it will make every effort to minimize this closure's impact on other employees.

Kruger Inc. is a producer of publication papers, tissue, lumber and other wood products, corrugated cartons from recycled fibers, green and renewable energy, as well as wines and spirits.
