Fire Reported at Alsip Paper Mill

Firefighters responded to a fire at a newly converted  paper mill now making containerboard in Alsip, Ill., USA, on Tuesday Sept. 6, 2016, according to a report on the same day by the Chicago, Ill., regional ABC affiliate WLS-TV.

The mill was until recent years known as the FutureMark Alsip Paper Co. But this operation was idled in 2014. Within a few years time, the mill had sold to new investors wanting to get back into using the site's mothballed but still fully recoverable industrial assets. But new owners were prepared for a full return to production though with some key PM modifications to address the growing need for packaging in the market now dominating to the point of aggressively replacing conventional P&W sheets of paper. Right before the fire on Tuesday, the mill had once again begun production (although it is not clear whether it was yet running to full commercial capacity and utilization) according to both GeosNews reports and industry/company information releases citing the now completed details of expansion and conversion.

The mill, transaction records show, was sold for $8.2 million, after FutureMark's shuttering, to Paper Mill Acquisition LLC, the winner at an auction. Now, the facility has been converted to recycled containerboard production. The facility is now managed be Alsip Minimill LLC

No injuries have been reported according to the regional ABC Chicago affiliate covering the accidental blaze. Officials have not released any details about what may have caused the fire. It is unclear at this time if any details, even in the most minor sense, are in any way related to the conversion of the machinery in a way that would trigger fire due to non-modern or optimal placing for flammable material housing.
