Drewsen Introduces Food Carrier Paper with Barrier Against Mineral Oil Contaminants
Drewsen Spezialpapiere / Drewsen Paper (Germany) reported at the end of this past month (Aug. 2018) it has successfully developed a new type of packaging paper (Probarrier - an evolution of the Procarrier line of kraft paper pictured right) that retains the advantages of current packaging material while incorporating an effective barrier against oil migration.
This barrier layeof natural vegetable-based and mineral components works to prevent gaseous mineral oil and related constituents from passing from exposure on the outside to the protected inside which will remain safe from contamination.
Drewsen reports that their Probarrier Natural Mineral Oil Repellant Papers can be processed by conventional methods such as into bags or as cartonliner.
Mineral oil components in foods are undesirable and harmful. It has been proven that saturated mineral oils (MOSH) accumulate in the human body, and aromatic mineral oils (MOAH) are considered carcinogenic.
A source of mineral oils often found in food, is the paperboard packaging made from waste paper. The recycled fibers contained therein include, for example, mineral oils from newsprint inks. These oils evaporate, penetrate conventional gaseous paper, cardboard and some plastics, and accumulate in food. Sources are therefore both the primary packaging made from recycled solid board and corrugated board.
Particularly affected by the subject matter are long-lasting foods that are otherwise adequately protected by paper packaging.
Product introduction means the company has developed a packaging paper that can replace previous paper packaging materials, and provide an effective barrier against mineral oil migration. A barrier layer of natural, vegetable and mineral components prevents gaseous mineral oil constituents from passing into the interior of the package.
