Around the world, climate change has already begun to impact our planet and is increasingly playing a role in the global economy and our everyday lives. Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to a changing environment can lessen these impacts. Negative emissions technologies (NETs) that remove and sequester carbon dioxide from the air can play a significant role in mitigating climate change. One such technology, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), is considered by many as one of the most viable and cost-effective negative emissions technologies available.
Kraft pulp mills produce a notable amount of biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) and have significant potential for implementation of BECCS, as well as bioenergy with carbon capture and utilization (BECCU). This captured carbon dioxide can be used to manufacture green fuels to replace fossil ones. The market for this new revenue stream can be substantial and pulp and paper mills, as large point sources of bio-based carbon dioxide, are well positioned to take advantage of this opportunity.
Learn more about this potential new revenue stream at PEERS 2020. Katja Kuparinen, Satu Kähkönen, and Esa Vakkilainen from the Lahti University of Technology (LUT) will present “New Revenue Opportunities for Pulp and Paper Sector from Carbon Capture” as part of the PEERS’ Environmental-Regulation-Sustainability track.
PEERS transitions to an all-virtual format November 2-4, 2020. This change creates an opportunity for many industry professionals to take advantage of the high quality technical sessions, research and keynote addresses without leaving their mill or office. Mills can save money and time while still offering exceptional training opportunities to employees.
PEERS is considered the premier technical event focusing on the latest advances in technology, as well as fundamental process knowledge and control issues mills face each day. The comprehensive, peer-reviewed program includes tracks focused on pulping, plant engineering, bleaching, energy, recovery, lime kiln, recaust, recycling, nonwoods and more. The Environmental-Regulation-Sustainability track addresses new developments in performance and monitoring, new revenue streams, energy solutions and regulatory development. Track presentations include:
PEERS is co-located International Bioenergy & Bioproducts Conference (IBBC). Attendees can attend both virtual events for only one registration fee.
