TAPPI Nanotechnology webinar: Progress of Nanocellulose and its Application in China, taking place on Monday, August 22nd 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM (ET). Professor Shiyu will discuss Nanocellulose and its application are widely studied in Chinese Universities, Institutes and Companies. Products of nanocellulose include cellulose nanocrystal, cellulose nanofibril and cellulose nanosheet, as well as lignin-nanocellulose. There are a lot of research on nanocellulose preparation from wood pulp, bamboo, and agricultural residues. The nanocellulose derivatives can be converted to hydrogel, aerogel, films, coatings, which can be applied as nano-ink, food packaging, photoelectric material, electrode material, etc. Nanocellulose coating on food packaging paper can provide an oleophobic layer besides enhancing the mechanical strength of paper. The enhancement of paper with lignin-nanocellulose is commercially manufactured. Lignin based nanocellulose is coated on food packaging, providing a scalable application.
Meet Presenter: Shiyu Fu, PhD, Professor Dr. Shiyu FU graduated from South China University of Technology in 2000 and worked as PostDoc in Institute of Paper Science and Technology at Georgia Institute of Technology, USA from 2001 to 2003. He was employed in the Guangzhou Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Science where he worked in the field of degradation of lignocellulose with white rot fungi and lignin-degrading enzymes for fiber process. He has been working in the State Key Laboratory of Pulp and Paper Engineering, South China University of Technology since 2004. His interest research areas include nanocellulose, cellulose-based nanomaterials, lignin degradation, biopulping and biorefinery. In this period, he helped a paper mill optimizing DDS cooking technique, and developed an easy procedure to prepare nanocellulose. He applies the nanocellulose for food packaging paper with water and oil resistance, ancient documents repair, nano-ink, hydrogel for drug delivery, etc. He has 400+ peer-reviewed publications and 9 chapters. |
