TAPPI Fellow Lawrence Harvey Allen passed away peacefully on September 14, 2022, at home in Pointe Claire, Québec. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandad. Lawrence and his wife Viola Dorothy Allen (née Harvey) shared a passion for canoeing, skiing, and hunting with their four children, and spent as much time as possible at their cottage at Lac Supérieur, Québec.
Larry was a committed researcher in the field of colloid chemistry in the pulp and paper industry. He graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Science in 1965 and went on to complete his PhD in Physical Chemistry at Clarkson University in 1970. Larry worked for the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada (which later merged into FPInnovations) for thirty-seven years and was one of the organization’s most sought-after consultants. He became a leader in pulp and paper chemistry research and co-edited the first book on wood resin. He was particularly proud to be able to save pulp and paper mills amounts often more than $10 million per annum in increased productivity and product quality.
A visitation at 11 am on Monday September 26th will be followed by a service at 12 pm in the Rideau Chapel at the Rideau Funeral Home, 4239 Sources Blvd, Dollard-Des Ormeaux.
