Nestle's Nespresso to Sell Paper-Based Compostable Coffee Pods
Nestle's Nespresso coffee business is launching paper-based compostable capsules to attract customers put off by the Swiss packaged food giant's metal ones, which despite being recyclable often end up in landfill.
Nespresso CEO Guillaume Le Cunff told Reuters that not all customers were aware that its aluminum capsules are recyclable, and may be more comfortable with the compressed paper pulp pods.
"The objective is not to replace all the aluminum pods with paper, but to give the consumer more choice. It's an alternative for sustainable options," Le Cunff said in an interview.

The Corrugated Cardboard Industry Presents Its Ambition for Climate Neutrality by 2050
FEFCO (the European Federation of Corrugated Cardboard Manufacturers) announced the launch of its Climate Neutrality Roadmap conducted by Climact.
This work responds to the EU Green Deal goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80–95% by 2050. Building on past achievements and thorough analytical work, the roadmap describes how the corrugated cardboard sector is committed to achieving climate neutrality. It lays out key milestones, the most plausible scenarios, the required investments, and the necessary policy measures to reach this goal.
The key findings show that the corrugated cardboard industry can reduce its carbon footprint emissions through actions directly within its control by 2050 compared to business as usual (BAU):
• Improvements in material efficiency and circularity that would reduce the footprint by 3,3 Mt CO2eq. (or 19%) by 2050 compared to BAU; and
• Further improvements in energy efficiency and decarbonization of the energy mix would reduce the footprint by an additional 2,8 Mt CO2eq. (or 16%) by 2050 compared to BAU.
FEFCO Hails European Commission's Proposal for Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation
FEFCO welcomed the European Commission’s proposal for a Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation that will contribute to the EU’s circular economy and climate neutrality ambitions. The Commission’s proposal included a transition from a Directive to a Regulation as it will allow for improved harmonization of packaging requirements and facilitate a level playing field in the European single market. Additionally, the waste reduction targets established by the proposal are a necessary step towards improving waste prevention and packaging sustainability across the EU.
The proposal provides a balanced approach to ensure that packaging “be designed, manufactured and commercialized in such a way as to allow for its re–use or high–quality recycling”. This recognizes the complementarity of both reuse and recycling systems in improving circularity.
