Ian J.H. Clarke-Pounder Has Passed Away

The TAPPI Family was saddened to learn that Ian J.H. Clarke-Pounder, a 37-year member of TAPPI, passed away November 18, 2022 after a brief illness. He was 93 years old.

A resident of Nashua, NH, Ian was born in Leeds, England, UK and attended Leeds College of Technology, McGill University (Canada) and Indiana State Business School. He went to work for Sulzer Bros. in 1943, working in various departments involved in the assembly and testing of submarine and locomotive diesel engines, and then as a draftsman designer in the drawing office. After serving in the Royal Air Force from 1950-1952, he returned to Suzler Bros until immigrating to Quebec, Canada to work as a research engineer for Ingersoll-Rand designing machines for the pulp and paper industries. He also designed and tested the vertical dewatering and sump pumps for the Canadian locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway. In 1970, he transferred to Ingersoll-Rand’s U.S. Division, first working in New Jersey and then settling in Nashua. During his tenure in Nashua, he held various positions through Vice President, and held some 17 patents both domestically and internationally which enabled him to travel the world extensively transferring technology, negotiating sales and licensing contracts.

As a TAPPI member, Ian was actively engaged from 1970 – 2007. In 1994 and 1995, he served on two Board Committees: Action Items and Information and the Leadership Workshop. In those same years, Ian also served as a member, Chair and Past Chair of the Pulp Manufacture Division Council, as a member of the Alkaline Pulping and Bleaching Committee, and as a member of the Refining, Cleaning and Screening Subcommittee. In 1998 he was awarded TAPPI’s prestigious Leadership and Service Award for the Pulp Manufacture Division. In addition, Ian was a member of TAPPI’s New England Local Section from 1987 – 1994, and contributed to the Alkaline Pulping Committee and the Mechanical Pulping Committee’s Technical Information Papers (TIPs) and Test Methods.

A service will be held for Ian on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Main Street United Methodist Church, 154 Main St., Nashua, NH 03060. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Kinsley St., Nashua.
