TAPPI Industry Career Center: CertainTeed Seeks a General Manager - Glass Mat & Granules Strategy
This role is home based and will travel as the role permits.The General Manager Glass Mat & Granules Strategy is responsible for assuring the continuous supply of Glass Mat & Granules (Volume and Quality) to all the CertainTeed Roofing lines. She/he also sets the global strategy, creates and leads the roadmap to transition into a vertical integration scheme for Glass Mat and a combination of external purchases and vertical integration for Granules.
The incumbent has management responsibility for the operation of the Glass Mat facilities in CertainTeed Roofing: Charleston, SC and Russellville, AL, Oxford, NC and future expansions or acquisitions. The position is responsible for planning and directing all plant activities such as production, scheduling, purchasing of raw materials, plant operation and maintenance, appropriate staffing, controlling product cost, assuring quality and shipping finished goods. The Granules operations (Glenwood, AK and Gads Hill, M) report directly into Roofing operations with a dotted line to the GM Glass Mat & Granules strategy who will be driving the Granules long-term strategy & lead granules product management.

Glass Mat Operations
- Foster teamwork and collaboration across all sites and functions to achieve alignment, and focused results through an engaged workforce.
- Manages the Operations of the Glass Mat plants providing all the support to achieve Performance and Budget goals.
- Creates the proper environment providing the needed resources to foster and consolidate a strong Continuous Improvement Culture.
- Develops, plan, communicate and gain approval for Budget, LRP, Capital plans for the Glass mat plants
- Provides guidance and direction about new technologies and raw materials for Glass Mat manufacturing, including Industry 4.0 and Digital tools, aiming for a State of the Art facilities.
- In collaboration with the Operations team leads the Glass Mat Roadmap for Sustainability and decarbonization of the Glass Mat Operations
- Oversees and facilitates the relationship between the Glass Mat plants and their customers at the Roofing sites.
- Selects, trains, evaluates performance and supervises directly all key personnel of the operations team.
- Mentor, support and lead the 2 Training Supervisors in charge of the Glass Mat educational program
Glass Mat & Granules Supply Strategy
- Develops and obtains approval for business strategy, including expansions or acquisitions, which will achieve objectives for the roofing business.
- Leads Castle joint-venture initiative to ensure Business Continuity strategy related to the supply of these critical raw materials to the Roofing Business.
- Owns the integration of the new glass mat line from conception to production, in close collaboration with all the functions of the business, including relationships with the county, city and education centers to assure the labor pipe line.
- Leads the internal efforts with Saint Gobain BU’s for the possibility of WUCS (glass fiber) supply in the future.
- Supervises, develops and coordinates activities for the Product Management, Supply Chain, Purchasing, Quality, R&D and Engineering functions of the business.
- Develops potential business for external sales of Glass Mat anticipating any inventory surplus & expands external sales of headlap granules.
- Creates the appropriate people development environments and tools to expand and consolidate the know-how in Glass Mat product and manufacturing.
- Define and implement Business Continuity Strategies for Glass Mat & Granules impacting Commercial and Residential.
Glass Mat & Granules Product development
- Directs the teams to shifts to a stronger approach for product management and development.
- Promotes and contributes to the consolidation of product specs for the internal mat, including product formulation, mat properties, mat performance, packaging and shipping.
- From the internal product specs, strives to approach and implement those requirements for current external mat contracts.
- Provides support and guidance to the R&D teams in product developments and product improvements.
Qualifications & Education
- Bachelor's Degree
- 10-15 years of experience in product management, strategy, sales, management, or similar role with P&L responsibility
- 10 years related experience in the application of Glass Mat or related product
- 10+ years leading direct and direct teams
