DS Smith to Invest in Cartogal Packaging Plant in Spain

British paper and packaging giant DS Smith will expand its Cartogal packaging plant in A Pobra do Caramiñal in Spanish province Galicia.

The British company will spend €11.35m to increase production and storage capacity at the plant. This will also involve a 6,000 m² enlargement of the operation surface, which currently amounts to 11,000 m², the company announced.

Works for the enlargement were started in March and will be carried out in several stages. During the seven months that the works are estimated to last, the new buildings will be put up and, at the end of 2023, new machinery will be installed.

DS Smith operates 26 plants on the Iberian Peninsula, 3 of which are located in the province of Galicia: the Cartogal facility, DS Smith Galicia in Vilagarcía de Arousa and DS Smith Tecnicartón Vigo, located in Porriño.

The company recently announced plans to expand its packaging activities in Finland and Germany. Furthermore, the company is upgrading its kraftliner plant in Portugal and mulls the installation of a new recycled containerboard machine in Italy.
