In Memoriam: Douglas A. Howard (1945 – 2023)

Douglas Arthur Howard was born in Snowflake, Arizona on February 16, 1945 to Rosa Howard (Wilderson) and George Howard. He passed away at his home in Eagle, Idaho, on July 16, 2023.

His employment throughout his life starting at the age of 18 was in the papermaking industry. Starting with the Southwest Forest Industries Papermill in Snowflake. He retired in Boise, Idaho in 2012. One year short of 50 years which had been his goal. During that time, he wrote peer-approved Technical Papers, been published in Trade Journals, and co-authored books. One of which became a best seller in the industry. After holding many positions, he retired a Senior Staff engineering consultant. He traveled all over the world, to help with different mills to help with papermaking problems.

Doug has been active with TAPPI over the years; particularly, the Papermaking Technology and Operations Committee. He served as Session Developer, Secretary and Vice President over the years (1995 – 2004). Doug was also part of TAPPI’s local section Couch Pit University (since 2012).

He always loved Harley Davidson Motorcycles and had many different ones in his life. He loved music and played the guitar until he lost his left arm in an industrial accident. He was able to play the Harmonica amazingly well and loved to give his grandkids a Harmonica to try and teach them to play.
