The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% from August 2022 to August 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. In value terms, toilet paper exports surged to $13M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2023. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.0% from August 2022 to August 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months.
Exports by Country
France (3K tons), Portugal (1.6K tons) and the Netherlands (449 tons) were the main destinations of toilet paper exports from Spain, with a combined 91% share of total exports. From August 2022 to August 2023, the biggest increases were in France (with a CAGR of +0.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns. In value terms, France ($6.6M), Portugal ($4M) and the Netherlands ($889K) constituted the largest markets for toilet paper exported from Spain worldwide, with a combined 90% share of total exports. In terms of the main countries of destination, Portugal, with a CAGR of +1.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
In August 2023, the toilet paper price stood at $2,291 per ton (FOB, Spain), leveling off at the previous month. Overall, the export price showed a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 7.7% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $2,392 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure. Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Belgium ($2,883 per ton) and Portugal ($2,456 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($1,980 per ton) and France ($2,187 per ton) were amongst the lowest. From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
