Professor Belgacem received his Engineering diploma in wood science at Saint Petersburg’s Forest Academy in 1986 (Russia), and a PhD in Material Engineering and Science from the Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble, France in 1991. He was awarded a fellowship from the National Research Council of Canada to carry out post-doctoral training for two years at the Polytechnic School of Montreal (Canada) as a researcher in the field of surface and interface phenomena in cellulose-based composite materials. After his fellowship, he worked in industry research and development for 5 years, before moving to the University of Beira Interior in Portugal where (from 1997 to 2000) he worked as an associate professor, then a full professor (2000 to present) at the Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble, France. He has published more than 350 scientific papers, including three books and ~ 25 book chapters with around 20,000 citations (H-Index ~ 70). Professor Belgacem was one of three Editors-in-chief of an Elsevier Journal: Industrial Crops and Products from 2007 to 2020.
