Innomost, a Finnish deep tech company, has launched Betuinno.™ Betulin, a new sustainable ingredient aimed at replacing harmful synthetic white pigments like titanium dioxide in various industries.
This innovative product, derived from upcycled birch bark, is set to revolutionize the beauty, surface coatings, and skincare sectors by offering a biodegradable and non-toxic alternative.
Betuinno.™ Betulin is designed to match the whiteness and reflectivity of traditional synthetic pigments while providing additional benefits such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is vegan, largely anti-allergenic, and aids in skin healing and regeneration. The ingredient is produced using environmentally friendly methods that minimize the carbon footprint, utilizing certified forest industry side streams.
The launch of Betuinno.™ Betulin is part of Innomost's strategy to expand into new markets and industries. The company has received additional funding of €1.4 million from existing investors Metsä Spring and Innovestor to support this growth. Innomost's products are already popular in the cosmetics industry, with major clients like Lumene, and the company aims to extend its reach globally.
Sami Selkälä, CEO and founder of Innomost, expressed excitement about the potential of Betuinno.™ Betulin to meet consumer demands for sustainable and safe beauty products. The ingredient can be used in a wide range of applications, including cosmetics, toothpaste, suncreams, and coatings, replacing titanium dioxide, which has been banned in food use in the EU and some US states due to health concerns.
Innomost has also completed a greenfield pilot plant at Northern Europe’s largest inorganic chemical industry park in Kokkola, Finland, to demonstrate its patented production technology and prepare for commercial scale production. This development aligns with the company's commitment to sustainability and circular beauty, as highlighted by its collaboration with partners like Lumene to increase the use of upcycled ingredients in their formulations.
