Lana Wilhelm, Director of Indigenous Relations at Paper Excellence Canada, has been awarded the prestigious Women in Forestry Award of Excellence by the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC).
This recognition highlights Wilhelm's nearly three-decade-long contribution to Canada's forest industry and her groundbreaking work in Indigenous relations.
Wilhelm's forestry journey began as a tree planter in western Canada, evolving through roles in soil and ecology research, and land use planning on Haida Gwaii. Her experiences with coastal First Nations shaped her vision of an inclusive forest industry."Learning from coastal First Nations cultural values fired me up with this vision of how I wanted to be part of a forest industry that worked together," Wilhelm reflects.
At Paper Excellence Canada, Wilhelm has developed a comprehensive Indigenous Relations program. She emphasizes the importance of leveraging Indigenous knowledge and skills in forestry:"Companies can leverage the deep knowledge and unique skillsets Indigenous people bring to the table in sophisticated partnerships. This can lead to long-term sustainable employment and procurement policies that drive change."
Wilhelm encourages others, particularly women, to consider careers in forestry.
