Norske Skog Skogn has successfully launched a new food packaging product made from 100% fresh wood fiber, marking a significant shift in the company’s sustainability efforts.
This innovative packaging, certified for direct food contact, is a key result of the company's conversion from recycled paper to pure wood fiber, part of its broader strategy to meet growing market demands for safer and more eco-friendly packaging solutions.
Håvard Busklein, Managing Director of Norske Skog Skogn, emphasized the importance of this launch: “Using pure Nordic spruce fiber without plastic or chemical coatings gives us a competitive edge, especially as the market increasingly prioritizes environmentally friendly options for food packaging.”
The product, which has undergone rigorous certification in a German laboratory, meets the highest safety standards for direct food contact, providing customers with the assurance that it is free of harmful substances.
At launch, Norske Skog Skogn has already secured over NOK 50 million in annual sales, with expectations to double that figure in the near future. While Europe remains the primary market, the company sees potential for expansion in Asia.
This shift from recycled paper to fresh wood fiber addresses the risk of contaminants found in recycled materials, making the new product safer for food packaging. Furthermore, unlike traditional packaging that often uses plastic or chemical coatings, Norske Skog's product is completely plastic-free, representing a step forward in sustainable packaging solutions.
