Smurfit Westrock has unveiled the EasySplit Bag-in-Box®, a packaging innovation designed to help businesses comply with the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
This regulation will require packaging to achieve at least 80% recyclability, prompting industry players to adapt.
The EasySplit Bag-in-Box® simplifies the separation of the bag and box components, a key step in meeting recyclability targets. When properly separated, the cardboard box and plastic bag can be recycled through their respective streams, boosting the recyclability rate to over 90%. Without separation, the package’s recyclability drops significantly, often evaluated under cardboard standards, where plastic elements may hinder the process.
Massimiliano Bianchi, CEO of Smurfit Westrock Bag-in-Box, emphasized the importance of early adaptation to these regulations, noting, “Smurfit Westrock is leading the charge in preparing the packaging industry for future regulations by launching our EasySplit Bag-in-Box® design.”
The company also highlighted its commitment to educating consumers on recycling best practices and promoting sustainability across the packaging sector. With this innovation, Smurfit Westrock aims to set a benchmark for eco-friendly packaging solutions.
