Market Roundup
The costs of hardwood fiber for the production of pulp have trended downward for more than three years. The Softwood Fiber Price Index (SFPI) has been fairly stable for the past two years.

The U.S. sanitary paper producer price index was flat in November, at a 3.5-year low, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics.

"We are expecting to see growth in global recovered paper demand at an average rate of 2.5% per year, reaching 346 million metric tons by 2029. Meanwhile, world paper and board output will expand by only 1.8% per year over the same period," said lead study author and Senior Recovered Paper Economist Hannah Zhao.

The South American paper and paperboard market increased to reach a total of 17.7 million metric tons in 2013.

During a time of rapid change in the industry, New York based Finch Paper is planning to invest in several critical areas—its several processing and converting operations, its pulp mill, and the company’s largest paper machine. State-of-the-art equipment and asset upgrades in the company’s woodyard operation will have many benefits including improvements in safety, chip quality, and fiber yield.

Containerboard/Packaging
PM 20 at the Chinese facility is the world's second startup of Valmet's OptiConcept M-type production line. The line combines high productivity with low operating costs. Valmet's delivery included the boardmaking line from headbox to reel with related air systems.

The 6,660 mm-wide (trim) machine, BM 1, will produce folding boxboard grades in the basis weight range of 180-350 gsm at a design speed of 1,000 m/min at the Swedish mill.
