Softwoods have the potential to process more easily into pulp and paper if engineered to incorporate a key feature of hardwoods. Altering the hard and fast distinction between softwoods and hardwoods — which process into largely separate product streams — could also create opportunities for the industries that process biomass for profit.

The research comes during a period of uncertainty for paper recyclers, following the closure of major paper mills UPM Shotton and Aylesford Newsprint in the past 12 months. Commenting on the research, Simon Weston of the Confederation of Paper Industries said the work would help identify where improvements on paper packaging recycling were needed.

OCC prices look like they’ll continue to head upward. Demand from China has increased since the end of the Chinese Spring Festival and their paper production plant maintenance period ended. Large Chinese paper producers such as Nine Dragons Paper and Lee & Man Paper have started preparing for the busiest box season, which began in July.

The insulated packaging industry has a positive outlook due to a high growth in the packaging industries. The growing demand for insulated packaging in developing countries, such as China, India, and Brazil, is due to the improved economic conditions and lifestyles, which is driving the growth of the insulated packaging industry.

Pulp exports from Russia increased by 5.1% in value and totaled some $524.4 million.

The new plant serves Kemira’s customers in both paper and O&M segments in the Nordics, Western Russia, and Eastern European rim and strengthens its capabilities in the growth areas. Strength products will respond to the growing demand of tissue, packaging boards, and specialty papers.

The project will cost some EUR 80 million ($87 million), with debt financing covering 75% of that and equity financing the remainder. The converted machine will have 70,000 metric tpy of parent reel production capacity, made from recycled and virgin fiber and marketed to both integrated and independent tissue converters.

Premier Paper Group, based in the U.K., has decided to purchase the Advocate brand from the former paper producer. Advocate was already available exclusively through Premier. This purchase assures the company will continue to stock and distribute Advocate papers. Plans are also being made to extend this range.

Pulsar America Inc. has moved to a larger location in Green Bay, Wis. Offices and workshop have been set up together with a new "show room"—a space where Pulsar will show some of its latest innovations. The new location will be officially inaugurated with an Open House September 21- 25.

Union members in Washington state will get raises through 2021, but members refused to ratify the contract because of concerns about health insurance plans.

SP Fiber produces containerboard and kraft and bag paper for end use in consumer and corrugated packaging. Made from 100% post-consumer recycled fiber, these products have earned FSC, SFI, and PEFC certifications. The total value of this transaction is $288.5 million.
