This past October, a team from A.Celli Paper’s Customer Service department, in collaboration with the mill’s specialized staff, dismantled the slitting unit at the Lebanon mill in just four days of machine downtime and two days of product testing, allowing the customer to resume standard production with no complications or delays.

Following the modification, the production line will be capable of producing filtration products in addition to wallcovering materials. The annual capacity of the line will be about 20,000 metric tons of wallcovering or filtration products. Work is expected to be completed by April 2016.

The operation began when a new concept for utilizing waste materials from regional sawmilling operations was developed. Residual waste of sawdust and wood chips would be used to make pulp, thereby providing economic development in the region while addressing an environmental challenge facing sawmills of the day.

The new machine is at the company’s mill in San Luis Potosí. Valmet's OptiFloheadbox with new innovative Aqua layering technology makes it possible to produce a two-layer sheet with very good layer coverage using only one headbox and one forming unit. A thin layer of water is used as a headbox wedge to separate different stocks fed into the headbox.

The scope of supply includess a PrimeFlow TW two-layer headbox with PrimeProfiler F dilution water control and PrimeForm TW gap former. PM 3 has a design speed of 1,200 m/min and produces fluting, testliner, and corrugated medium, with a basis weight range of 80-150 gsm. Startup is scheduled for late 2016.

Emami Paper Mills, India, the country's largest newsprint manufacturer, has decided to increase investment in paperboard to Rs 2,000 crore in the next three years to strengthen its diversification in the country's new high-margin segment. Buoyant growth of consumerism has now led to production of multi-layered coated paperboard.

In the T1100S, they are supplying not just a press, but a fully integrated production system for corrugated preprint. Printing uncoated paper on the T1100S includes dispersing a bonding agent from printheads before the ink is sprayed. For coated papers, a unit of the press flood-coats substrate with primer to insure ink adhesion.

The facility recently added 250,000 sq. ft. Growth is possible because of a growing demand for renewable products such as the company’s paper cups. The growth of the facility was profiled in detail this past week by a local Ohio newspaper. The plant makes products for Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Dairy Queen, Starbucks, and more.

The innovative design captured the attention of a Canadian brewer seeking unique and distinctive packaging for marketing craft beer in aluminum cans instead of traditional craft brewery glass bottles. The design won a Judges’ Award from the Paperboard Packaging Council.

A key advantage of the new fiber is its lower energy consumption during processing and defibering. Tests show Eucafluff's potential to replace 70% of fibers in feminine hygiene and 30% in diapers. Eucafluff production is concentrated in the Suzano Unit in São Paulo and is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Published Pricing
NORPAC plans to increase the price of 30 lb. (48.8 gsm.) standard newsprint by $20.00 per metric ton effective Feb. 1, 2016. Prices for other newsprint basis weights will increase proportionally and as per past practices.

The European Investment Bank financed a Polish containerboard plant for Stora Enso (Helsinki, Finland). Stora Enso’s reuse of local recycled fiber led to higher waste collection in nearby regions and to higher production at the containerboard plant—a circular process of growth shared by Stora Enso and the collection companies.

Monadnock has achieved re-certification for compliance with ISO14001:2004, the leading international standard for environmental management systems (EMS). SGS Group, a leader in third-party registration, recently completed a comprehensive independent audit of Monadnock’s Bennington, N.H., USA, facility.

Research has shown that locally-sourced natural trees have less environmental impact than artificial ones. Average households replace an artificial tree about every six years. Evidence shows that, in general, artificial trees made of plastic need to be reused for at least 20 years if they are to compare favorably with natural trees.

England was the last part of the U.K. to adopt the 5p levy following successful schemes in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The British Retail Consortium said the number of carrier bags now used by U.K. shoppers indicated there had been a significant reduction.

The $260 billion global plastic packaging industry depends on fossil fuel chemicals, resources under pressure recently at U.N. climate talks in Paris. Pulp and paper makers are taking the opportunity to point out that they can produce easier-to-recycle products from trees to replace plastic bags, containers, coatings, and even fuel.

The steam generation energy recovery project in Quebec, Canada, was one of the top projects of the year as voted by ENERGY STAR members and the Energy Manager Today Project of the Year Award. These awards are a source of pride for the company, since this is the first project of its kind in the North American industry.

The new 10 MW biomass-fired boiler plant will increase PorvoonEnergia's district heat production capacity and will be the main production plant in Loviisa's district heating network. It will be fueled with bark and wood chips. The choice of Valmet was due to local support and previous successful projects.

David Ingham will be responsible for the U.K. and Ireland as well as France and Benelux market areas. Ingham was recently was director of an independent consultancy and has extensive experience in fiber-based and barrier packaging gained with market leading companies such as Walki Group, Sappi Europe, and others.

John Schauer will be responsible for leading Xerium’s North America Nonwovens business plan as well as coordinating Xerium’s global efforts. He also will support Xerium’s active engagement with The Nonwovens Institute at North Carolina State University.
