APRIL said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Papier Union, worth $35 million and a deal with Roxcel worth $15 million, noted in this past week's edition of OTW, to cooperate in the European market.

Two new pulp drying lines were started at Klabin's new pulp mill in Ortigueira city, Paraná state in Brazil. New pulp mill will have the capacity to produce 1.5 million metric tpy of pulp, with 1.1 million metric tons of bleached hardwood pulp (BEK) made of eucalyptus and 400,000 metric tons of bleached softwood pulp (BSK) made of pine.

Aim of the rebuild is to improve the profile quality of the specialty papers produced and also increase energy efficiency of the production line. The modifications will also allow production to be stepped up on PM 1 in the future.

Norpac announced April 29 that it would increase 30 lb. newsprint prices in two $15 per metric ton installments on June 1 and July 1. Catalyst Paper told its customers on May 3 that it too will implement $15 increases on 30 lb. newsprint, effective on June 15 and July 15.
