The forest products sector will be leaning more than ever on innovation in the coming years, as the industry transforms into one that emphasizes bio-energy, high-rise wooden buildings, and a wide range of new products that rely on forest products. Those new forest-dependent products will include everything from cosmetics to clothing to auto parts.

Rising demand for paper packaging is expected to fuel product demand owing to its enhanced properties such as reinforcement and durability of the base material. Overall, forest products shipments climbed 12% in the first nine months of 2015 compared to the same period in 2014. The Canadian province's forest products industry association soon expects Ontario to be able to employ up to 90,000 employees again, a level last achieved before the 2008 global recession.

Both the HFPI and the SFPI price indices fell in the 1Q/16 with generally lower prices in Europe, Canada, and Russia partly because of weakening currencies against the U.S. Dollar, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly. The plant would come online in 2017, extracting hemicellulose sugars and lignin from an existing dissolving pulp line, while improving the pulping process. Earlier this month, OTW reported a U.S. bankruptcy court gave Verso permission to terminate an agreement to let Expera use PM 5. As expected, Verso rejected the offer. Detailing company desire to keep the PM for future/unrealized specialty paper demand, Verso's returned PM already has a new product taking orders.

Sustainability
Germany was one of the first to achieve endorsement of its national system in 2000. It now joins Finland as the only other country to gain re-endorsement for a record third time, a requirement for all countries every five years. Also, a second edition of Malaysia's forest standards were released and subsequently re-certified.

This is the first trial of its kind in Japan. Kao began procurement of FSC-certified corrugated cartons in March 2016, and by the end of 2016, approximately 50% of corrugated cartons used by Kao will be FSC-certified. By 2020, Kao will purchase only pulp for raw materials that is traceable to the source.
