U.S. containerboard inventories in June dropped 152,000 tons on stronger than expected box shipments in the spring. The drop brought inventories down to 2.426 million tons, a level 7% higher than the 10 year June average. The 152,000-ton decline compares with an average decline of about 4,000 tons for June during the past decade.

The European Investment Bank is lending EUR 25 million to Navigator Co. to upgrade the pulp mill in Cacia, Aveiro (Portugal). This EIB financing operation will contribute to the modernization and expansion of the plant to increase its efficiency and production with a view to achieving a 20% rise in annual output.

Andritz reported Monday the company has received an order from S.A. Industrias Celulosa Aragonesa (SAICA) to supply the system for its paper mill in El Burgo de Ebro, Spain. Startup is scheduled for September 2017. System ensures high fiber yield from various waste paper streams and reliable operation.

"Uruguay could accommodate a third state-of-art pulp mill... if the logistics infrastructure would be rebuilt to support large scale export-oriented businesses. If these challenges can be solved in the coming few years, Uruguay could be a competitive alternative for addressing UPM's pulp market opportunities in the 2020's," said UPM's SVP.

Sustainability

Energy
As part of the deal, Blue Energy Europe (BEE) will acquire a biomass boiler, turbine, and generator from UPM's closed Myllykoski site in Finland. BEE will transfer the power plant components to the vicinity of UPM's Hürth mill, and provide steam for the mill.
