NCSU reports that paper science and engineering programs in the U.S. produce about 150 graduates each year. They’re recruited immediately after graduation. Most receive multiple job offers, and nearly all are hired within six months, with a starting annual salary in the low-to-mid $70,000 range — more than most entry-level engineers receive in different disciplines.

New in-depth market study by QY Research released on Feb. 19 lists top 11 producers on the global market for away from home (commercial / industrial room) tissue paper production and reports that the segment currently accounts for approx. 33% of the total global tissue market and is growing at a healthy CAGR going forward in the period through 2025.

AF&PA released it's January 2019 Printing-Writing Monthly report yesterday afternoon. Total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 8% in Jan. compared to Jan. 2018. Total P&W paper inventory levels increased 3% from Dec. 2018.

Pulp & Paper
The new E-WIND T100 rewinder will be used for all types of high quality tissue paper, weighing from 13 to 45 gsm; it is equipped with three unwinders and a calender, maximum operating speed 1900 mpm, maximum diameter of the finished roll 1800 mm.

CFO Alex Rotolo said 2017 was a tumultuous year in the paper industry as a lot of companies went out of business. While that was not good for those employers, it caused paper prices to increase as the supply shrank. "Because the market finally balanced, we were able to get fair prices for our paper and make a profit," he said. Company is now upgrading hardware and software for the PMs and more.

The Nozomi ultra-high-speed corrugated production solution from Electronics For Imaging, Inc., has allowed Renton, Wash., USA-based CSI to capture significant new market opportunities at its new, high-volume trade printing operation in Santa Teresa, N.M. And, in 2019, CSI is on pace to become the world’s largest user of EFI Nozomi presses, with a second press scheduled for installation at a facility in the Las Vegas area, and a third press eventually.

As a result of the revamp, more than 40 million Arla packages will become more environmentally-friendly in 2019 to reflect consumers' wishes. Bioplastic is well suited to dairy product packaging as it has the same technical characteristics as the conventional plastic used in cartons. Like the old material, the new packaging can be recycled with cardboard.

Legislative
AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman thanked U.S. Congress for reaffirming that federal regulatory policy should reflect the carbon neutrality of forest-based renewable biomass. Fiscal Year 2019 appropriations legislation, which passed the House and Senate, contains legislative language to that effect.

The govt. of Canada has announced it will invest up to $7 million in a new biomass research cluster. An additional $3.1 million is contributions is expected from industry, bringing the total investment to $10.1 million. Funding the new Biomass Cluster under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year, $3 billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial govt.

The policy change has created what has been described as "an uproar" by sources this week close to the industry. Many in the printing / paper related industries believe that job definitions are in need of update to reflect the true nature of the reflective health of the print-on-paper industry.

Nanotechnology
Concerns over the long-term effects of plastics in our environment have led to stronger calls for biobased, renewable materials. Project involves developing a new generation of forestry machines for more sustainable and low-impact forestry. The idea is to develop a machine that, with low ground pressure, causes less driving damage in the forest and improved driver comfort, at the same time as productivity can increase and there is a more even flow of timber for industry over the year.

Energy
A private company perhaps familiar with wood-pulping tech is sought for a $200 million dollar biomass-for-energy project in Hanover, N.H. USA. Construction cost $40 to $50 million; the hot water trans. system and dist. system about $40 to $65 million; the energy transfer stations $10 to $12 million; and 119 buildings will cost approximately $60 to $75 million. Interested firms, said to be working closely with Goldman Sachs, have until April 17 to submit their statements.

Safety
As a leading European producer of fresh fiber paperboard, Metsä Board said it wants to ensure that it operates according to the same standards as its customers in the food industry. All of Metsä Board’s mills already have an ISO 22000 food safety system in place, and in addition to this, its Simpele mill had already introduced the FSSC 22000 system in 2017.

Lindner joins WestRock from the privately held W.L. Gore & Associates, where he has served as its COO.
