Sappi North America, Inc., a leading producer and supplier of diversified paper and packaging products, today announced the call for entries for its 2019 Ideas that Matter grant program, inviting designers to show the world how print can play an important role in changing lives for the better. This year, the company celebrates the 20th anniversary of the program, which Sappi established to support designers who apply their creative talents to benefit causes that address significant issues facing our society.

Representatives of the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) partnered with the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association to underscore the value of the paper and wood products manufacturing industry to the state’s economy during Illinois Business Day – #ILBizDay2019. In meetings with legislators at the state capital in Springfield, AF&PA advocated for public policies that underscore the paper and wood products sector value and strengthen its ability to grow the economy and create jobs. Members of other manufacturing sectors did the same for their individual industries.

2019 started well for the Koenig & Bauer group, posting a double-digit increase in order intake in the first quarter year-over year to €276.4m. This strong growth, which exceeded the industry average, was underpinned by significantly more orders for services and for folding carton, direct glass and security printing presses. At €230.7m, revenue exceeded the previous year’s figure by 6.2%. EBIT was still slightly in negative territory due to the low revenue level, coming to –€2.8m despite high market-entry and growth-related expenses, and was thus not far off the previous year’s figure of –€1.9m. At –€4.9m, group net earnings in the first quarter of 2019 translate into earnings per share of –€0.30.

Company, Inc. (Bemis) yesterdayannounced that its shareholders voted to approve Bemis’ combination with Amcor Ltd.at the company’s Special Meeting of Shareholders held earlier today. Nearly 76% of shares outstanding voted in favor of the transaction; of the votes cast, approximately 96% were in favor of the transaction.

Cascades Sonoco, a joint venture of Cascades Inc. and Sonoco Products Company, mon May 1 inaugurated the expansion of its facility in Birmingham, Ala., USA, and its new production line of innovative, eco-friendly packaging. This important investment of US$17 million enables the facility to now produce a water-based functional coating solution to create recyclable, repulpable and compostable containers. Numerous partners, clients, suppliers and employees took part in the event.

Caraustar Industries, (Cedartown, Ga., USA) one of the nation’s largest integrated manufacturers of 100 percent recycled paperboard and converted paperboard products, installed the market-proven HP Indigo 30000 Digital Press in its Pineville, North Carolina facility. The company is using the press to digitally produce folding cartons with faster speed to market, variable data for mass customization, and reduced waste and obsolescence.

As Ingersoll Paper Box Co Limited nears its century mark of proudly being in the folding carton business, this 97-year-old Canadian firm continues to invest in the latest technology to maintain its strong growth. A few years ago the firm increased its print output with the addition of a Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 seven-color 41-inch fully-automated printing press—the first of its kind in North America. Fast-forward to today and Ingersoll has opted for another Koenig & Bauer model for its post-press department—a new high-speed Koenig & Bauer-Iberica Optima 106K die cutter, which was operational in January.

In mid-April, Sappi is launching its new Atelier paperboard, developed under the motto "brilliance meets function". The special feature of the new GC1 board lies in its unrivalled combination of visual and physical features. Atelier combines a large specific volume with a high stiffness, as well as a high surface quality with a unique 100-percent brightness. The folding boxboard GC1 is offered in grammages ranging from 240 to 350 g/m2.

Sustainability
SCA cooperates with approximately 25 contractors as part of the planting work. This in turn means almost 500 planters will be active in the forests, from Svappavaara in the north to Hassela in the south. The planters are from many different countries, including the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Romania, Ukraine and Nepal. They begin planting in mid-May and continue into October.

Extreme weather conditions will increase globally due to the magnitude of climate change. The change in variables like heavy rain falls, wind and snow damages or drought are posing a threat to the balance of nature. Droughts have already increased the risk for forest fires in many areas.

Has a constant stream of negative press questioning recycling’s effectiveness led some consumers to worry about whether recycling is "worth it?" Fortunately, there is good news to share. Survey data released by the Paper and Packaging Board (P+PB) in its 2018 Campaign Impact Report reveals that 83 percent of consumers surveyed agree recycling paper of all kinds is still worthwhile.

With immediate effect, Mr. Gould has become the majority shareholder and will work with the current board of Directors and Denmaur employees to further the growth of the business.
