The evaporation plant in Indonesia has a design capacity of 2,900 tons of evaporated water per hour and has in high load tests performed above 3,200 t/h. This is by far a world record for pulp mill single line evaporation.

The curtailments are due to very poor lumber markets and the high cost of fiber, which are making the operating conditions in BC uneconomic. Curtailments will reduce Canfor’s production output by approximately 200 million board feet.

With capacity to treat 100 metric tons of biomass annually, the bio-refinery pilot plant produces lignin and sugars for use in the development of innovative bio-products, such as wood adhesives, animal feed and composites. PMP will supply a new Crescent Former Intelli-Tissue® Advanced 2100 machine with a maximum capacity of 41,000 tpa, reel trim of 2850 mm and the maximum balance speed of 2100 mpm. Machine will produce high quality tissue with the basis weight range of 12.5-40 gsm at the reel. Will improve Mexican market.

Containerboard/Packaging
Huhtamaki plans to expand the range of products manufactured at the site to other paper-based product categories. The first wave of manufacturing equipment is taken into use during 2019 and further investments in additional manufacturing equipment are planned for 2020-2022.

McKinley Paper reached agreement with the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers Local 155 on a new labor deal that will be in effect once McKinley opens its Ediz Hook paper mill, company and union officials said Monday. The question remains when the plant will begin production of containerboard out of 100% recycled cardboard.

New Products
Acadia 2000 is a premium one-side coated paper claimed to have superior bulk and excellent smoothness. The wet strength label resists disintegration and rupture when exposed to water or other moisture build-up, making it suited to replacing the plastic-type label. The material is aimed at soft drinks, juice, coffee, beer, wine and other cold liquid food packaging, where it can withstand varied temperatures and humidity.

Hopes are high when a high-end retailer, a premium food manufacturer, an innovative fiber material producer and a food packaging specialist join forces in an accelerated development project. The aim was nothing less than to find a plastic-replacing, sustainable solution for ready meal trays used in significant quantities every day.

Essity has set additional packaging targets aimed at reducing its environmental footprint. One of the new targets states that 85% of the company’s packaging is to be manufactured from renewable or recycled material by 2025.

Both improvements are tied to the planned replacement of the company’s OCC pulper, which is 22 years old, scheduled for this fall, but not before the public comment period expires June 28.

Energy
The new program will rely on a wind farm based in Knox County, Texas to generate over 400,000 MWhs of electricity. The renewable power will offset 100% of the energy usage within Crown’s U.S. and Canadian beverage plants, which account for over 20% of the Company’s global Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) on June 11 announced that Heidi Brock, President and CEO of the Aluminum Association, will join AF&PA as its new President and CEO. Brock is succeeding Donna Harman, who announced her intention to retire earlier this year after 12 years serving as AF&PA’s President and CEO.

Sylvain Lhôte was the Director General of CEPI since 2016. He brought a strong leadership to the organizsation, reforming the way of working, focusing on building efficient working tools and processes, encouraging synergies and increased communication among colleagues and value chain partners.

Since December 2013, Marie Cyr has served as the Windsor Mill’s pulp mill manager and superintendent, responsible for developing the pulp mill’s strategy and leading its manufacturing operations. She is an inspirational leader with experience working with large teams in operations, maintenance and engineering.

We honor Art Rankin who was a member of TAPPI for 40 years and extend our sympathy and condolences to his families, colleagues and friends. Art was active during his working career and after retirement in both TAPPI and PIMA. Art was an amazing TAPPI volunteer who invested his time and expertise with Northeast TAPPI, Lake States TAPPI and Empire State Local Sections. Education was his life’s passion and he worked tirelessly on the Boards of Directors of the University of Minnesota Paper Science and Engineering Council and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Paper Science and Engineering Foundation. He was co-founder of the first PIMA student chapters at both schools. Throughout his career, he was honored with many service and leadership awards, which he cherished.
