The newly formed Paper Receipts Converting Association (PRCA) applauds California’s State Senate for stopping the advancement of Assembly Bill 161, which aimed to ban the use of paper receipts unless specially requested by customers. This move is aligned, not only with the paper receipts industry, but also with retailers, restaurants, and consumers who overwhelmingly favor paper receipts.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its August 2019 Printing-Writing Monthly report on Friday, September 13. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 14 percent in August compared to August 2018. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers declined 13 percent in August compared to the same month last year.

Siemens is planning to acquire Process Systems Enterprise (PSE), a technology- leading global supplier of software and services for advanced process modeling. Advanced models are used within digital R&D, design and operations in the process industries to help make fast, safe and more efficient decisions through rapid and effective exploration of the decision space.

Case Paper announced that it has expanded its Miami, Florida facility by 22,000 square feet, bringing the total area of the plant to 110,000 square feet.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö is currently exploring potential acquisitions, mergers and joint-ventures with decor paper suppliers in China to speed up the execution of its strategy and capture the attractive value-creation opportunity in the decor business. In addition, the company is investigating the possibility to attract outside capital investment into the Decor business to further fund such objectives.

Containerboard/Packaging
Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, has started a new paperboard sheeting line at its Äänekoski mill in Finland. The investment was earlier announced in a press release on 15 November 2018. The new line will increase the annual capacity of the sheeting plant by 35,000 tons to a total of 120,000 tons.

Most of the paper packaging material made by Canadian mills today is 100% recycled content. Old corrugated boxes and cartons are collected from the back of factories and supermarkets; used paper from offices; and a wide range of paper material gathered and sorted from residential (Blue Box) programs across the country.

The Biorenewable Deployment Consortium (BDC) honored Domtar with the organization’s inaugural 2019 Forest Products Innovation Award for their culture of innovation in the deployment of new biorenewable processes directed toward achieving the highest value from the tree.

A recent consumer survey commissioned by Two Sides showed a disconnect between consumer perceptions and the facts about the industry’s impact on global GHG emissions. The survey showed that 29% of Americans believe that paper production is a major contributor to global GHG emissions. However, the U.S. pulp and paper sector is one of the lowest emitters of GHG emissions among major U.S. industrial sectors at 1.2% of total U.S. industrial GHG emissions.

Smurfit Kappa Group has appointed Eduardo Rubio as the new CEO for Smurfit Kappa North America (SKNA). He will begin his responsibilities on October 1.

Stella-Jones Inc. (“Stella-Jones” or the “Company”) announced the appointment of Eric Vachon as its new President and Chief Executive Officer. Currently serving as Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Vachon’s appointment will take effect on October 11, 2019, succeeding Brian McManus, who in July, announced his intention to step down in mid-October. Concurrently, Mr. Vachon will be joining the Company’s Board of Directors.
