UPM will strengthen its cost competitiveness and reduce its CO2 emissions by 5 % by investing in a Combined-Heat-Power (CHP) plant at its Nordland paper mill in Dörpen, Germany. The new facility supports the German energy transition “Energiewende” by contributing to the stability of the public power system.

Valmet has been chosen as the second most attractive employer by the Finnish engineering professionals. The ranking was published in Universum’s annual survey, which is the biggest employer survey in Finland. Last year Valmet was ranked as fourth.

Packaging Corporation of America (NYSE: PKG) today reported third quarter 2019 net income of $180 million, or $1.89 per share, and net income of $182 million, or $1.92 per share, excluding special items. Third quarter net sales were $1.8 billion in 2019 and 2018.

Sawmill profit margins have fallen substantially in North America over the past 12 months, with BC sawmills margins in the 2Q/19 being close to their lowest levels in 15 years.

Pulp & Paper
Siemens is planning the acquisition of Edge technology from the US company Pixeom. With this action, Siemens is strengthening its Industrial Edge portfolio by adding software components for Edge runtime and for device management.

Lee and Man, one of the world’s leading paper producers, has been manufacturing linerboards and corrugated packaging products since 1994. More recently, however, the Chinese company has also become a top tissue paper producer. Its success in the hygiene products sector is attributed to its unique sourcing mix. Facial and bath tissue grades manufactured by Lee & Man have a cost advantage thanks to the integration of a 180,000 tons per year unbleached bamboo pulp line that blends kraft pulp and eco-friendly bamboo fibers at its Chongqing mill in southwestern China.

Packaging for the Future. This was the motto the Koehler Paper Group used to present itself at FachPack 2019 in Nuremberg. "Together we are stronger" could also have been a possible title for the presentation at the trade fair, where the company presented a wide range of products that offer the packaging industry exciting alternatives.

The Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) has announced the top winners of its 76th annual North American Paperboard Packaging Competition. These folding cartons and rigid boxes represent some of the best paperboard packaging manufactured by North American converters over the past year.

Holmen is now taking another step towards more resource-efficient and digital forestry. Through an advanced three-dimensional image analysis of the forest company’s wood deliveries, Holmen will be able to increase the efficiency of transport and boost the added value of the wood.

Sappi North America, Inc. announced a partnership with the nonprofit organizations American Forest Foundation (AFF) and GreenBlue to support the Forests in Focus sustainability risk assessment. The goal of Forests in Focus is to provide customers, brand owners and investors with user-friendly analyses of the sustainability strengths and risk profile of forested lands across specified landscapes.

DS Smith, the leading provider of sustainable packaging, has today announced its membership of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) International, which promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests.
Since the acquisition and integration of Interstate Resources and more recent acquisition of Europac, DS Smith now owns over 14,000 hectares of forest assets across North America, Portugal and Spain.
