Cascades inc. (TSX: CAS), a leader in eco-friendly recovery, packaging, and hygiene solutions, announced the final closure of its tissue paper converting operations at the Waterford mills in New York State and Kingman, Arizona. The closure is scheduled for March 27, 2020.

Willamette Falls Paper Company, Inc. has made its first successful trial of non-wood paper grades using pulp from local agricultural waste – producing both coated and uncoated grades using 10% non-wood pulp fiber. Additional machine and press trials are ongoing to refine the paper properties and specifications.

More than 75 percent of bleached virgin cartonboard manufactured in Europe and Asia is folding boxboard (FBB). Yet, in North America, FBB production is nearly non-existent. Used in limited amounts, the North American FBB demand is fulfilled mostly by imports.

Market Roundup
International Paper (NYSE: IP) reported third quarter 2019 financial results. Third quarter net earnings attributable to International Paper of $344 million ($0.87 per diluted share) compared with $292 million ($0.73 per diluted share) in the second quarter of 2019 and $562 million ($1.37 per diluted share) in the third quarter of 2018.

Resolute Forest Products Inc. (NYSE: RFP) (TSX: RFP) reported a net loss for the quarter ended September 30, 2019, of $43 million, or $0.47 per share, compared to net income of $117 million, or $1.25 per diluted share, in the same period in 2018. Sales were $705 million in the quarter, a decrease of $269 million from the year-ago period.

Pulp & Paper
Rottneros develops the Group's raw material supply through the acquisition of Nykvist Skogs AB. The deal means that Rottneros will increase the long-term availability of forest raw materials offered by private forest owners, while Nykvist Skogs will continue to develop as an autonomous and independent raw material operator.

Rayonier Advanced Materials announced that it has completed its previously announced sale of the Matane, Quebec pulp mill and related assets to Sappi for a total purchase price of US$175 million.

Containerboard/Packaging
ROI NJ reports that the Georgia-based box and packaging company WestRock is closing its Newark plant, potentially putting more than 100 employees out of work. Work at the facility, located on McCarter Highway, will be moved to other plants, a spokesperson said. According to a federal WARN notice, as many as 114 workers could be affected by the end of the year.

The Duluth News Tribune reports that the Duluth City Council voted 7-1 Monday night, with 5th District Councilor Jay Fosle absent, to amend the ordinance originally proposed by 3rd District Councilor Em Westerlund.

New Products
Valmet is the first company in the world to offer roll covers based on biomaterials and recycled materials for board, paper, tissue and pulp making. These new composite covers for press, guide, and calendar rolls are now available for the first customer deliveries.

Sustainability
The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE) is pleased to announce that the recycling rate for beverage cartons in the EU28 rose to 49% in 2018. This is a small (1%), but steady increase in the EU beverage carton recycling rate from the previous year.

Ari Tanninen, M.Sc. (Eng.) has been appointed as the new Vice President of Sales of Consumer Boards at Kotkamills Oy as of the 11th of December 2019. He will be in charge of the Consumer Boards global sales organization and its activities. Tanninen has previously worked both at Metsä Fibre Oy and Stora Enso Oyj in various management positions, such as in production and in business management. Tanninen will report to CEO Markku Hämäläinen.

Fabio Perini has appointed Francesco De Luca as the new General Manager for its Bologna plant in Italy. De Luca has worked with several multinational corporations such as the Metecno Group, the Candy Hoover Group and Norsk Hydro, where he had the opportunity to extend his knowledge in the field of general management, working in several extra-European countries such as China, Uzbekistan, Russia, Iran, Syria, Turkey and Egypt.

The Board of Directors of BillerudKorsnäs AB has appointed the current Chairman of the Board, Lennart Holm, as acting CEO from November 5, 2019. Petra Einarsson leaves as CEO with immediate effect.
