TAPPI Fellow Jeff Reese, International Paper, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 30, 2019, surrounded by song, prayers, and love after a courageous battle with cancer. As a TAPPI member, Reese exemplified service leadership and received many of the organization’s highest awards. The family will honor his passion for making a difference through the Jeff Reese IMPACT Scholarship at NCSU.
 
Valmet and Whakatane Mill Ltd have signed a multiyear agreement for continuous performance service for Whakatane PM3 board line in New Zealand. The value of the agreement will not be disclosed. The original performance agreement was signed in 2014 and was later extended for another three-year period. This renewal is the second extension with continuous and systematic development of Whakatane PM3’s productivity and quality with concrete targets regarding availability and optimization.

Oji Holdings Corporation plans to expand thermal paper output at its Brazilian subsidiary Oji Papéis Especiais Ltda.The company has earmarked JPY13bn (~€110m) to upgrade existing coating facilities and install a new coater at its mill in Piracicaba.
 
Ilim Group announced that it has completed the KLB Line Rebuild Project in Bratsk (Irkutsk Oblast), Russia, with CAPEX worth more than USD 120 million. The mill started checkout and commissioning in October. The project, which is part of Ilim's large-scale investment program involving development of the existing facilities and launch of new capacities, will increase kraftliner production capacity of the Bratsk mill by 50% — from 198,000 tons up to 300,000 tons per year.
 
Fedrigoni S.p.A., an Italian and European leader in the production of specialty papers and high value-added products for packaging and fine printing and self-adhesive labels, has signed an agreement to acquire the Ritrama group, an Italian multinational group specializing in self-adhesive products. Ritrama has manufacturing facilities in Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Chile and China.

UK corrugated cardboard producer Ablebox has unveiled plans to create some 50 new jobs at its new factory in Henstridge. The producer invested some £7 million (US$9 million) in establishing a new production facility.

University of Maine’s Islam Hafez will develop a nanocellulose-based point-of-use purification system that removes arsenic from drinking water. The USDA awarded the postdoctoral researcher in UMaine’s School of Forest Resources US$132,403 for the two-year project. The university is contributing US$67,216 toward the project.

As part of its ongoing Better Planet Packaging initiative, Smurfit Kappa has collaborated with one of its partners, Mitsubishi HiTec Paper, to create a new type of innovative and recyclable food-safe packaging. A combination of Smurfit Kappa’s expertise in paper-based packaging and Mitsubishi HiTec Paper’s strength in coated papers has led to the first product in the new range being shortlisted as a finalist in the Swiss Packaging Awards.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) presented its 2019 Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 Sustainability Awards at AF&PA’s annual meeting on Friday, Nov. 8 in Bluffton, South Carolina. Five AF&PA member companies received six awards.

Sonoco, (NYSE: SON), one of the largest diversified global packaging companies, has announced the promotions of two leaders: Rob Dillard and Jeff Tomaszewski. We honor James E. Macklem and send our sympathy and condolences to his family, colleagues and friends. James passed away in Beloit, WI, on September 4, 2019.

James graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1949 from Beloit College with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and physics.  He continued his education to receive a Ph.D. from the Institute of Paper Chemistry.

James was a third-generation employee of Beloit Corporation and worked there for over 30 years. He supported various divisions in research, sales, and he bacame the head of the Estimating Department. For his work, he travelled extensively in Europe and the U.S. Throughout his life he kept well-informed of advances in paper machine technology and expanded this through his membership with TAPPI. James will surely be missed by our industry.
