The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the October 2019 U.S. Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 10 percent in October compared to October 2018. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased 13 percent in October compared to the same month last year.

Pulp & Paper
Valmet will supply Defibrator™ system to Tianjin Shengsong Wood Co. Ltd in Tianjin, China. The start-up of the system is planned for the middle of 2020. The order was included in Valmet’s orders received of the third quarter 2019. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

RISE has purchased 60 percent of the shares in MoRe Research. The agreement, which was signed October 23rd, further strengthens RISE’s position as Sweden’s industrial research hub and as one of the largest bioeconomy market actors in Europe.

Sappi Limited is pleased to announce that its three dissolving wood pulp (DWP) production facilities namely Cloquet, Ngodwana and Saiccor Mills have completed the Higg Facility Environmental Module (Higg FEM) self-assessment via the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s (SAC) online portal. The Higg FEM is a sustainability assessment tool that standardises how facilities measure and evaluate their environmental performance, year over year.

Containerboard/Packaging
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the October 2019 Boxboard Monthly report on November 18. Total Boxboard production in October increased three percent compared to October 2018. It was essentially flat (-0.5%) when compared to the same 10 months of 2018. The boxboard operating rate was 91.7 percent, down 1.7 points from October 2018 and down 1.4 points year-to-date.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) presented its 2019 Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 Sustainability Awards at AF&PA’s annual meeting on Friday, Nov. 8 in Bluffton, South Carolina. Five AF&PA member companies received six awards.

American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Heidi Brock applauded the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for bringing together recycling stakeholders, decision makers and government officials to celebrate recycling and identify solutions for a stronger domestic recycling system. Brock attended the second annual America Recycles Summit, hosted by the EPA at its DC-based headquarters.

At the Paper Shipping Sack Manufacturers’ Association (PSSMA) 2019 Annual Meeting, held October 24-27 in Phoenix, Arizona, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to name Robert E. Langston of Langston Companies as the second recipient of the Richard E. Storat PSSMA Industry Excellence Award.

Verso Corporation (NYSE: VRS) announced that Michael A. Weinhold has been named President of the company, reporting to Chief Executive Officer Adam St. John, effective immediately. Mr. Weinhold has been with Verso since 2006 and has held multiple senior leadership roles in sales, marketing and product development.
