Industrial Opportunity Partners (“IOP”), an operations-focused private equity firm based in Evanston, Ill., today announced that it has acquired Midwest Recycled and Coated Containerboard Mill, LLC (“Midwest Paper” or the “Company”). Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Brookfield Properties plans to build the largest mass timber office building in North America as part of its 28-acre Pier 70 waterfront development at a historic shipyard property in San Francisco. The new 310,000 sq. ft. mid-rise mass timber building will be 85-feet-high with six-floors. It will be the first ground up office parcel built at Pier 70, where construction is underway on a $3.5 billion waterfront neighborhood with housing, offices, parks and space for artists and local manufacturing, and rehabilitated historic buildings.

The Chinese group Shan Don Sun Honghe Paper Industry Co., Ltd. has purchased three more A.Celli E-WIND® P-100 Rewinders, this time for the subsidiary Sun Paper Savannakhet Co., Ltd., for a project in Laos located in Xepon, province of Savannakhet.

Pulp & Paper
Valmet will supply an Advantage DCT100HS tissue production line, including a de-inking plant and an extensive automation package, to Alas Doradas in El Salvador. The order also includes a Valmet Performance Center agreement to support efficient production with Industrial Internet. The new tissue line will fulfill Alas Doradas’ demand for new capacity of high-quality tissue products in the region. The start-up is planned for the first half of 2021.

The CBC reports that just weeks before the mill is scheduled to shut down, officials with Northern Pulp have informed the Nova Scotia government they plan to continue with the environmental assessment process for a proposed new effluent treatment facility.

Celulose Nipo-Brasileira S.A. (CENIBRA) set a new annual production record in 2019, with an output of 1.2 million tons of bleached eucalyptus hardwood pulp. This figure is 16,676 tons above the budget.

Sonoco (NYSE: SON), one of the most sustainable, diversified global packaging companies, today announced it has completed the acquisition of Thermoform Engineered Quality, LLC, and Plastique Holdings, LTD, (together TEQ), a global manufacturer of thermoformed packaging serving healthcare, medical device and consumer markets, from ESCO Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: ESE) for $187 million in cash.

A law approved by the government of Tyrol, Austria, prohibiting the transport of certain goods, including paper and board (P&B) products and waste, by heavy-duty vehicles on a section of the A 12 Inntal motorway came into force on January 1, 2020. The law, which aims at reducing pollution in the Tyrol region, was approved in 2019.

Sustainability
The Organizing Committee of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games recently decided that the beds athletes will sleep in at the next Olympic and Paralympic games will include cardboard frames made from high-resistance cardboard and mattresses formed of polyethylene materials that can be recycled.
