In September 2019, UPM announced the intention to sell its Chapelle newsprint mill in Grand-Couronne, France. It was communicated at the same time that a process for the potential closure of the mill would be opened in case no credible offer would be received until mid-January 2020.

New data from Isobar, a renowned market research company, revealed that the national industry campaign, Paper & Packaging – How Life Unfolds®, has helped expand the audience of 18 to 49-year-old consumers who feel positive about paper and paper-based packaging products from 38 million to 50 million consumers.

Valmet will supply a board machine rebuild to Umka Cardboard Mill in Serbia. The main target of the rebuild is to increase the customer’s production capacity. The start-up of the rebuilt paper machine PM 1 is scheduled for the second half of 2021.

Market Roundup
Wood Resource Quarterly reports that wood raw material costs were down for pulp manufacturers in most regions around the world in the 3Q/19 as compared to both the previous quarter and the 3Q/18. Prices for softwood pulplogs and wood chips were down between 1-15% quarter-over-quarter, depending on region, with the biggest price reductions occurring in Germany, France, Sweden and the US Northwest.

Valmet will deliver key process islands for Lenzing’s and Duratex’s joint venture named LD Celulose S.A. The new 500,000 ton/year dissolving pulp mill is located in the cities of Indianópolis and Araguari in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Valmet’s delivery includes a fiber line, a pulp drying and baling line, an evaporation plant, a white liquor plant and a mill-wide automation system. The order is included in Valmet's orders received of the first quarter 2020.

International technology Group ANDRITZ and UPM have signed a preliminary agreement under which ANDRITZ is to supply energy-efficient and environmentally friendly pulp production technologies as well as key process equipment. The final contract will have a mid-triple-digit million euro order value for ANDRITZ and is expected to be booked in Q1 2020.

In a single day, DS Smith’s new state-of-the art box manufacturing plant is able to produce more than 17 million square feet of lightweight recyclable packaging – enough to overlay the entire Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The opening of the corrugated plant heralds the company’s latest technology, keeping pace with increasing demands by consumers and retailers for fully recyclable boxes and “fit-to-product” packaging that reduces costs, waste and “packing air” of irregularly shaped items.

Unifor has joined with Northern Pulp and nine individuals representing the broader forestry industry in a request for judicial review filed today in Nova Scotia Supreme Court. The application seeks a review of Nova Scotia Environment’s (NSE) December 17, 2019 decision regarding Northern Pulp’s proposed effluent treatment facility (ETF) project.

The Awarding Ceremony of the 7th Edition of the European Paper Recycling Awards took place in the European Parliament in Brussels. The event takes place every two years with the specific goal to highlight and reward European projects, initiatives or campaigns that change the way we recycle paper in Europe and help us achieve our ambitious goal of a 74% paper recycling rate by 2020.

A new, approximately two-kilometer-long connection pipeline will transfer the heat from the mill to an existing pipeline that links up the local refinery with the municipal heating grid. The local district heating supplier Stadtwerke Karlsruhe will start the construction of the pipeline in late 2020, aiming for completion by the end of 2022.

Mr. Lalonde succeeds Jo-Ann Longworth, who will be retiring after a distinguished career, including the past seven years as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Resolute.
