In response to the shortage of personal protective equipment front-line responders are facing while fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, HSMG™ donated 10,000 masks to the State of New York. These masks were delivered on Wednesday, May 20, and will be used by the State’s Emergency Management Team.

Mondi, global leader in packaging and paper, is set to build new production lines in its plant in Gronau, Germany, to produce melt blown nonwoven fabric and surgical face masks. This is part of Mondi's efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and respond to increased demand by health authorities, businesses and consumers for face masks.

To strengthen the initiatives to fight COVID-19 in São Paulo, Klabin, Brazil’s largest paper and packaging producer and exporter, has allocated more than R$1 million for donations in the state. COVID-19 Impact
Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bureau of International Recycling has sought to collate expert feedback on the impact of the virus around the world, with specific regard to how it is affecting the recycling industry. This latest update has been sourced from the world recycling organization’s network of member national associations.

International technology Group ANDRITZ has received the PAC (Provisional Acceptance Certificate) from Volga Pulp and Paper Mill in Balakhna, Nizhnij Novgorod Region, Russia, for rebuild of the existing groundwood reject line as a TMP (Thermo-Mechanical Pulping) line. Due to the corona crisis, the complete start-up work was handled remotely in order to avoid any health and safety risks.

Metsä Tissue filed an environmental permit application with the Land and Environment Court in Vänersborg concerning its plans to increase fresh fibre based tissue paper production at its Mariestad mill in Sweden. The Land and Environment Court will decide in the matter after reviewing the application and considering the opinions of authorities and stakeholders. The authority is expected to issue its decision on the matter within the regular processing time, in 12−18 months.

Market Roundup
Amid strong demand from Europe and Turkey, prices for old corrugated containers (OCC, 1.05) continued to go up quickly on the UK market in May. However, experts believe they will now remain stable or even decrease slightly.

Canfor Pulp Products Inc. (TSX:CFX) is announcing the curtailment of Prince George Pulp and Paper and Intercontinental Pulp for approximately four weeks starting July 6, 2020.

In the middle of April, earlier this year, Södra Cell Mörrum decided to place an order for an additional Grubbens horizontal pulper 2W25-64/51S to the press section of TM2. The pulper will be part of a package including montage/de-montage, valves, piping, pumps, motors and conveyors in collaboration with both Metrans and Sulzer.

UPM restarted construction work on its new 2.1 million metric ton/yr bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp mill in Paso de los Toros in Uruguay on April 13.

A new thick paperboard from Iggesund Paperboard has been certified for HP Indigo for printing high-value applications on commercial digital presses. The 18 pt (457 microns) Invercote Creato 380 g/m2 is double coated on both sides, offering identical print surfaces on both sides, making it especially suitable for premium packaging applications The paperboard was tested and certified for the HP Indigo 10000 series and HP Indigo 7000 series presses.

The ISTA Global Board of Directors is pleased to announce the election of Greg Batt, Associate Professor at Clemson University, as its new Chair. Greg succeeds, Sam Sheppard Fidler, Vice President Europe with Smithers, who will remain on the board serving as Immediate Past Chair. Bill Green, Senior Technical Staff Member (STSM) - Asset Transit Quality and Protection with IBM was also elected as Vice Chair. ISTA is very fortunate to have these accomplished and committed members of our community to lead the association.
