Sappi North America is laying off dozens of employees at its Westbrook mill, the company announced. Sappi said it is permanently shutting down Paper Machine 9 and the majority of the energy complex at its mill.

For the planned expansion of the wood chips transport between the storage area and the digester house at their cellulose processing plant, LENZING AG, a leading company in the field of the production of fibers made from the raw material wood, contracted a second RopeCon® conveying system.

At this time of year, it is usual for softwood lumber prices to be lowering, as end-users would be stocked-up on inventory needs for ongoing building projects, and sawmills would be slowing down as normal seasonal closures and curtailments come into effect. However, this year — having largely stopped production during spring as industry responded to Covid19 infections — softwood lumber producers across North America are still operating at relatively high capacity levels.

Pulp & Paper
AkzoNobel and Alucha are collaborating on technology that turns paper sludge into resources for making paint. Alucha won the partnership in AlzoNobel's 2019 "Paint the Future" global startup challenge.

Valmet will supply pulp production upgrade technology to PT. Tanjungenim Lestari Pulp and Paper (PT TEL) in Indonesia. The delivery includes an upgrade of continuous cooking system, with a design capacity of 1,800 air dried metric tons per day, and two sets of new automatic baling equipment. With the new investments, PT TEL targets to increase its pulp production capability and improve its pulp quality.

ANDRITZ has received an order from Vinda Personal Care (Guangdong) Co., Ltd. to supply a stock preparation system to feed its four tissue machines at the mill in Yangjiang, Guangdong, China.

Mondi, global leader in packaging and paper, has commissioned a crude tall oil plant (CTO-plant) at its Syktyvkar pulp and paper mill. The new equipment allows processing of all sulphate soap generated as a by-product of the pulp production process in the mill. As a result of this investment, the mill will be able to produce up to around 40,000 metric tons of crude tall oil annually.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released new industry guidance that aims to clear up consumer confusion regarding the recyclability of pizza boxes. The guidance resulted from a study conducted by WestRock — an AF&PA member company — that found the presence of grease and cheese at levels typically found on pizza boxes does not impact manufacturing in a negative way.

Sustainability

To coincide with World Environment Day and South Africa’s Environment Month, on 04 June 2020, Sappi Limited committed to set science-based targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
