FPInnovations is receiving $1.3 million from the federal government for a COVID-19 response project to develop a biodegradable, sustainable filter for single-use face masks.

Kruger Inc. has entered into a partnership with Pulp Moulded Products Inc. (PMP) for the supply of low-carbon footprint fibres that will enable PMP to produce a prototype of a low-cost, single-use biodegradable mask.

A new dedicated study of specialty papers in North and South America, finds these two regions consumed a total of 5.88 million metric tons in 2019. Market demand will drop as a result of Covid-19 in 2020 to 5.71 million metric tons before returning to positive growth (1.4% CAGR) and reaching 6.13 million metric tons in 2025 according to The Future of Specialty Papers in North and South America to 2025.

Smurfit Kappa has today announced it has been chosen to participate in an innovative energy research project on renewable energy storage. The HYFLEXPOWER project will see Smurfit Kappa's Saillat Paper Mill in France become the first plant in the world to introduce an integrated hydrogen gas turbine demonstrator.

Andritz has received an order from AO Knauf Petroboard to install a new reeling section for the KM2 board machine at its mill in Kommunar, Russia.

Pulp & Paper
Valmet will supply start-up clothing to Stora Enso’s Oulu Mill in Finland. The start-up clothing includes forming fabrics, press felts, shoe press belts and dryer fabrics. The clothing order is related to Stora Enso’s paper machine (PM 7) grade conversion project delivered by Valmet.

In the highly competitive global pulp industry, energy efficiency is providing an edge. Pulp production is energy intensive and Canada has tougher environmental standards than many other major pulp-producing countries.

Progroup will start up the new paper machine in Sandersdorf-Brehna at the end of August, Euwid reports.

Ilim Group continues to implement the project for construction of a new pulp and paperboard mill (PPM) in Ust-Ilimsk, Russia, in accordance with the project schedule.

Domtar announced in a quarterly report that it is shutting down uncoated freesheet manufacturing at the Kingsport Mill, but will repurpose assets at the plant and will eventually employee 160 people in 2023.

De Jong Verpakking BV (DJV), the only independent corrugated manufacturer in the Netherlands is pleased to announce that it has completed the acquisition of Bangma Verpakking and strengthens its position on the Dutch food packaging market. The Autoriteit Consument en Markt has approved this acquisition.

DS Smith announced the appointment of Johan van Baarle as Sales Director of its Paper Division. Reporting to Niels Flierman, Managing Director for Paper, Van Baarle will be responsible for the division's paper sales across Europe and North America - managing around 5 million metric tons of paper produced at DS Smith's mills annually.
